Can Massage Therapists Provide Nutritional Therapy?

Nutrition plays a very big role in musculo-skeletal health as well as our overall health.

While massage therapists are not certified nutritionists, we can provide out clients with some valuable information as to what to eat.

There is some concern that this is out of our scope of practice and if we are not certified nutritionists we will be doing something that is illegal.

We can provide nutritional therapy or nutritional coaching as long as we don't call ourselves nutritionists or other such designated terms without appropriate education.

In today's world of so many different types of diets, food allergies and intolerances it is difficult to know what to eat and who's advise to follow.   Most of what we know about health is really

just someone's opinion no matter how much research has been done.  (see box.)

I am providing this nutritional information based on my readings, research, personal and professional experience.  When talking with clients I make sure to say that this is what I do or this is what I have read to make sure they know the source of the information.  The can then make their own decision for themselves and do more research.  I also highly recommend that people search out appropriate health care providers to support the nutritional process.

Please check with your licensing and legislation divisions to learn of any other legal aspects of this subject.
