Tips for Choosing a Mentor (Supervisor)

  1. Find a respected therapist in your area.  You may want to get a massage from them first to see what they are like or set up a meeting over tea/coffee to ask them about their practice. There are some people who advertise their services as a supervisor (coach as some may call it).

  2. Ask about what skills you are interested in developing - marketing, business, insurance billing, client issues and see if their ideas are similar to yours.

  3. Present your idea of what you need in a mentor/supervisor.

  4. Determine a simple structure for the relationship.  How often will you meet?  When and where will you meet? Supervisors will often require payment for services.

  5. If the person has never been a mentor before, it will be a learning experience for them too.

  6. How will you evaluate whether the relationship is working?  If you find there are some challenges, try to work through them rather than quitting.
