Massage Therapy Jobs

Even though recent statistics show that more massage therapists start

their own massage business, there are starting to be more massage therapy jobs and opportunities.  The recent surge of massage franchises like Massage Envy and Elements to just name a few are providing jobs for massage therapists.  These franchises offer low cost massage to people which means that they also do not pay the massage therapist very much and offer little in the way of benefits.  Entry level pay starts at $12-$15 an hour in places like these.

Other health care providers are also starting to hire massage therapists.  The most common are chiropractors, spas, resorts, medical clinics, health clubs, hospitals and even dentists.  Massage therapy jobs in places like these usually pay more like $25-$50 an hour and even more depending on what area you live in.

Some employers will try to hire massage therapists as sub-contractors or independent contractors basically meaning that the massage therapist is considered to be self employed.  There is a lot of controversy over who is considered to be an employee vs a subcontractor.  You will need to check with an attorney to figure out your true status.  There will be a big difference in taxes for you so it is worth your while to figure this out.  Many massage employers will try to take advantage of massage therapists and hire them as subcontractors but still tell them when to come to work and what to do.  Be sure to know how you want to set it up.

Most massage therapists start their own business basically because you can make much more and you have much more freedom.  You can usually start a massage business on very little and be very successful.

Until the past 5 years or so there were not many jobs in massage.  While jobs can be one way to go, they also are usually filled with many other aspects.  Jobs in general are a prime vehicle for projecting one's unmet needs and repressed feelings.  Careers or vocations are a calling of the soul to find meaning through one's work.  Instead of just looking for a massage therapy job, look for something to fill your life with meaning.
