4.      Worker’s compensation or Labor and Industries.

Each states workers compensation plans vary.  You usually need to sign up to become a provider with each state.  You will need to contact the proper authority to see if they recognize massage therapy services.   Find out what rules and regulations they have regarding massage therapy services.

Some questions to ask the state labor board:

·        Do I need to become a provider with the state?  If so what is the process?

·        Do I need to work at a doctor’s office? Does my work have to be supervised by a doctor?

·         Do I need a referral/prescription?

·        Do I need an authorization code?  Do I need authorization?

·        What CPT codes can I bill for?  How many units?

·        How many sessions are allowed?  Can this be renewed?

·        What is the process for billing?  Is there a manual available?

·        Do I need to send chart notes and the prescription with the bill?

·        Is there a fee schedule?

Most labor boards have provider fee schedules and service manuals available so that you can learn how to bill them properly.

The Labor & Industries and Workers Compensation

Divisions are usually not up to date with allowable codes and Usual, Customary and Reasonable fees (UCR’s).
