Esalen Institute Presents Esalen Massage – VHS and DVD Formats

Since we released the Esalen Massage Video in May l997, we have been overwhelmed by the positive review comments from everyone it has touched -- massage therapists and bodywork professionals, massage schools, healthcare professionals, and everyday moms, dads, friends, and lovers who, with no previous experience, have successfully used the Esalen Massage Video to discover both the techniques and spirit of Esalen Massage. This video offers spectacular photography of the unique setting at the Esalen Institute, as well as up-close photography of specific techniques, reviews and recaps, helpful tips and more. Here’s a sampling of review comments.

About Esalen

"Esalen massage stands out as one of the most important developments of the 1970s. More than any other influence of that decade, it turned the mainstream onto massage." -- Patricia J. Benjamin, Massage Therapy Journal, Winter 2002, American Massage Therapy Association

Actually, Esalen massage began at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, in the early 1960s. This is stated clearly in the Massage Therapy Journal, Millennium 2000 issue, in the very fine article by Brian Coughlan with colorful photographs of Esalen Institute’s massage venues, “Esalen, Where It All Began in the Mid-20th Century, Looks to the 21st; Esalen had an important role in popularizing massage for health maintenance and stress reduction.”

"Esalen is a sacred space where we come not to rework our practical life, but to discover an inner life, to respond to a vocation, to find a calling." -- Joseph Campbell

"If feeling good is a religion, its cathedral is Esalen." -- Time Magazine

"Esalen has evolved into an institution. It is the Emerald City of massage and bodywork." --------- Vogue Magazine

People who have experienced Esalen Massage agree that it is extraordinary -- a unique, holistic style of bodywork which focuses on the whole person. According to Spa Magazine, "An Esalen massage therapist views the work as a time of meditation, using intuition to relate to a client . . . the recipient is gently urged to become an active participant through heightened awareness and surrendering to a deep sensing place." Shot entirely on location at the acclaimed Esalen Institute, this hands-on instructional video presents a complete, full-body session designed to guide from head to toe.

Customer Reviews

Just received and watched your new Esalen Massage DVD. Really fabulous. Thank you very much. For you to share this with anyone in the world, without having to travel thousands of miles is just great. It will help me as I'm sure it has and will many others. The clarity and attention to detail of the massage is an example of the true massage ideal. From my heart - Thank you.

The Esalen Massage Video is truly the most beautiful and helpful massage video that I have seen. (I own two other massage videos and have seen others at workshops.) There is a sensuality and flowing and lyrical quality from all the practitioners as they connect to their clients. The background of the video and music is exquisite. I often watch the video before I do a massage -- then incorporate some of the moves and techniques into my massages -- and my clients will comment on the extra wonderful massages they just received. Thanks to Esalen for your beautiful video.

What an inspiration the Esalen Massage Video has been. As a massage therapist my technique is seldom the same from one session to the next. I adapt the massages to the needs of the client. And each time I watch the video I see a technique I can adopt and use for the benefit of each client. Among the massages that impress me are:

•   Attitude: the mindful act of nurturance and care.

•   Attention: to the specific act of joints, bone, fluid, organs, mind, and spirit.

•   Focus on the person, not just the body.

•   Full Body Involvement in the execution of the strokes -- Good Body Dynamics.

•   Balanced Attention: All parts of the body are addressed and treated.

I am writing to tell you how much I have enjoyed your massage video. I have purchased others in the past, but the techniques in your video are wonderful.

I already ordered once but my friends got my video and I need another one just for me. Please use the same credit card as before, if you still have it in your records. Thank you very much in advance; it is an awesome video!!!

I enjoyed your Esalen Massage Video so much that I ordered another as a gift. The unique technique of the many Esalen therapists were integrated with such skillful editing that I found I was watching a dance. Bravo, it makes it a pleasure to re-watch and listen to the entire video when I want to review even a short section for technique.

I am writing to tell you how much I have enjoyed the Esalen Massage Video. The video beautifully captures the concepts of Esalen Massage, communicating them in a visual and auditory manner that highlights the simplicity and intuitive nature of the act. The beauty of the practice of Esalen Massage makes it accessible and possible for those of us who are drawn to learn it and practice it. The video appears to be superbly edited, as each sequence or portrayal of a particular concept is a poignant demonstration that actually made me, the viewer, feel a part of the experience. Not only is your video an effective instructional tool in a nonmechanistic or technical way, but in an aesthetic, moving, and sensual way, it is also a work of art in itself and beautiful to watch. Sometimes it felt like watching or observing an art form -- like a dance or martial art. Thank you for providing those of us who are interested with such an effective and memorable video.

Francesca

I found your video ‘Esalen Massage’ to be informative and inspiring. Even after almost fifteen years of practicing massage I find myself with a renewed sense of enthusiasm. Thank you!

Katie

I loved the video. I have incorporated several of the long strokes and techniques I have learned from the video.

I just want to thank you for the video; it arrived yesterday. After watching I just had to let you know how pleased I am with this purchase. The way the video is presented, its quality, beauty, and detail surprised and delighted me. Thanks again! With kind regards,

Les

My clients immediately noticed a change in my work. The video slowed me down and reminded me of things I had forgotten as I got more and more into the business end of things. You should be aggressively marketing this video to schools of massage. Many students enter these schools from a left-brained profession such as nursing, etc. This hopefully would have stopped the focus on ‘our routine’. The hope would remind the students that caring for how the client is feeling every minute was far more important than a flawless performance where no stroke was forgotten! Thank you for the video.

I just wanted to share with you that I love the video and music. I just graduated from massage school and passed my boards a week ago. After watching your video a few times I did massage therapy to two of my doctor receivers. They gave me feedback that my work was the best massage therapy they ever received from me. Thanks so much.

I ordered a copy of the Esalen Massage Video and have enjoyed it a lot. I fell in love with the music in that video, and would love to order a copy of the soundtrack. Is it called At Peace Music from Big Sur by Michael Benghiat? (Harmony Music CD) I am hoping to get them soon.

Joanna

I watched the video with several massage therapist friends and we all were inspired by the video. I felt I gave my best massages in a long while after watching the video. Michael Benghiat’s music helped to recreate the mood of the video the following day as I worked, and continues to do so. I use it very often and look forward to having a variety of choices of his music to use at my office.

Shelly, LMT

I bought the Esalen Massage Video and CD after watching a friend’s copy of the video. I was really impressed with the video. I have incorporated some of the techniques into my massage routines. But I really wanted to talk about the CD. I think it is fabulous. It is now my favorite CD to play both during massages and just when I want to relax. When I first received the CD and started playing it for the clients, they would fall asleep within the first five minutes of being on the table, which made my job easier. Now I play it all the time especially for my clients who don’t know how to relax well; the CD really helps. It is 60 minutes of pure listening pleasure. I can’t wait to get Michael Benghiat’s three new CDs. Thanks.

Linda S.

I love your video, just like everybody else!

Jalina M.

I’m just writing to tell you how much I enjoyed the Esalen Massage Video. I am a massage therapy student in New York where everybody knows the reputation of the Esalen Massage Program. I thought what better training than to watch the pros of Big Sur in action. My partner was a good sport and allowed me to practice on him while I watched the video and, surprisingly, we both had a good time. I gazed at the beautiful vista and listened to the calming centering suggestions of the massage therapists and tuned into myself to learn how to sense, feel, and integrate while he relaxed and witnessed my style improve. The whole approach is very organic, not just ‘technical’ movements, and everything was sensitively demonstrated with great circularity of expression as well as specific precision. I felt a little guilty, for as I watched and worked, thinking I might have been taking some attention away from him. However, he was really enjoying it, and told me when it was over that everything was soothing. He felt my movements became more continuous and deep and that I was ‘integrating’. He remarked that his tense legs felt better and it was one of my best massages yet. I can’t wait to watch it again and pick up more pointers. I’ve already told a lot of my massage student friends to purchase this video, and some of them are already learning about the Esalen Institute in their Bodywork Modalities class. Actually, my friends and I were thinking of taking a trip out to Big Sur as a graduation present to ourselves. I can’t wait to see that vista in person; meanwhile I have the video and the CD to remind me. Thanks again!

Dawn S.

I have so many other videos, but this Esalen Massage Video is definitely my all time favorite.  . . . It is so inspiring.
